9 reasons travelers hate LaGuardia Airport - Channel3000.com - WISC-TV3

Here's a look at one of the most disliked airports in America:. Losing sleep. Want to catch a few winks between flights. Don't bet on it. LaGuardia ranked as among the worst airports in the world for sleeping, according to "The Guide to Sleeping in Airports. "While a departure from here is manageable, a delay here becomes the definition of mind numbing. Sleeping here is even less appealing, given that businesses shut down and the chairs all seem to have armrests and no cushion," the website says. Late again. Only 65% of the flights arrived on time. It is the worst in the country for on-time performance, the Global Gateway Alliance (GGA) found in a a report earlier this year. A higher percentage of flights to and from the airport were disrupted than at any other airport in the U. S. 3. Try getting there. LaGuardia ranked 12th out of 13th for mass transit access. GGA put it near the bottom on the basis of high cost and low access to public transport. Sorry mom, can't Skype. Good luck getting on the web. LaGuardia ranks 38th on a list of the 50 busiest U. S. airports for cell phone data usage tested by RootMetrics. It's ancient. You can't escape the past. Some of the infrastructure dates back to LGA's original 1939 Work Projects Administration construction. New York Gov. Cuomo's office says that the last major investment was in the 1990s. 6. What's an amenity. When it comes to amenities, LaGuardia is severely lacking. In a report released by the GGA, it ranked at the bottom of the 20 busiest U. S. airports in 2013. The report said it failed to provide any of the four passenger-friendly amenities they were checking for, including play areas, free wi-fi, good... Mashable compared the 20 airports with the highest Twitter traffic and ranked them from best to worst. LaGuardia came in at a lowly 18th, garnering more negative attention than positive. Stop overloading. The Central Terminal Building, Terminal B, was supposed to hold 8 million passengers when it was designed in 1964. It served 13. 5 million passengers in 2014. 9. Can't get any worse. LaGuardia topped Conde Nast Traveler reader's choice awards 2014 list -- in a bad way. The magazine labeled it "America's worst. Source: www.channel3000.com

The Day the Haskell Came of Age - BloodHorse.com (press release) (registration) (blog)

As American Pharoah prepares for his assault on Monmouth Park in the Haskell Invitational, and with a record crowd projected, there will be electricity in the air unlike anything felt at the Jersey Shore in a century and a half. A great deal has transpired at Monmouth over the years, going back to post-Civil War days. Monmouth has had a long and storied history and has been a microcosm of racing in America since 1870, complete with a “Civil War” showdown in 1871 between Longfellow, the pride of the South, and the North’s Harry Bassett. Over a quarter of a million dollars was bet on the race, with much of the money on Longfellow being raised by the mortgaging of plantations by prominent Southerners. Harry Bassett was heavily backed by Northern and Western cash. Over 25,000 jammed the track to witness the South rise again for a brief moment, as Longfellow came home the easy winner. It is safe to say no track has been as innovative as Monmouth over the years, especially during the reign of Amory Haskell and then Phil Iselin. But few people realize that in 1891, reformist elements waged a war on racing when outlaw tracks such as Guttenberg and other small plants sprung up around the Garden State, forcing Monmouth to transfer its meet to the old Morris and Jerome Parks... Monmouth was dealt its fatal blow in 1892 when two of its mainstays, George Lorillard and David D. Withers, who were part of the syndicate that purchased the track in 1878, died in succession. Although the track ran successful meets in 1892 and ’93, the reformists, along with the state Legislature and an ambitious district attorney from Monmouth County put the seal on Monmouth’s demise. There would be no racing there for the next 53 years. It wasn’t until 1944 that Amory Haskell formed a corporation to build a new Monmouth Park. Haskell hired Phil Iselin as chairman of the construction committee, and on June 14, 1946, Monmouth’s great tradition was reborn. One by one, the innovations mounted. Haskell, an opera buff, built the unique parterre boxes, patterned after the Golden Horseshoe boxes at the Metropolitan Opera House. Each box had its own overhead fan, a dining table in the rear, cushioned chairs up front for viewing the races, and a buzzer on the wall to summon your waitress. Among its other innovations were a 75-foot-long swimming pool for the jockeys, air conditioning in the. Source: cs.bloodhorse.com

The challenge of new furniture and pets - Lynchburg News and Advance

They used to lollygag free in the house when I left for work. Now I consign Baguette and Jezebelle to the basement. My old mattress and area rugs are down there for them, but still it’s a basement. When I’m home, I flip up the cushions of the new furniture I’m not using to make them less appealing than the memory foam dog beds on the floor. This has changed our evening routine. Previously, the dogs had the option of cuddling with me on the sofa. If the two joined me at the same time, I moved to the middle, swaddled with dogs. During thunderstorms, Jezebelle would jump onto my lap and stay there, inconsolable and drooling, until the storm passed. Now, if I want to cuddle with them, I sit on the hard floor, dogs flanking me. I wonder what’s the purpose of having dogs. What is the purpose of owning nice new furniture. Can these two purposes be reconciled. If not, which one should have priority. Currently, priority goes to the furniture. I have turned into my mother who, despite my childhood protests, barred our family dog from the living room when it was newly carpeted. Sheets or throws on the new furniture won’t resolve the dilemma. Baguette paws sheets into piles to form a nest, exposing the fabric to her fur, which is short, stiff and good at clinging to a cushion no matter the strength of the vacuum cleaner’s suction. One time, she ripped a sofa while burying a toy there. Jezebelle’s lightweight hair travels everywhere, even if she doesn’t. Homemakers from the 1960s got it right when they encased furniture in plastic. Everyone could sit on a plastic-covered sofa, and you could see the fabric to boot. Why did everyone laugh at these pioneering, practical women. Ahead of their time, I suppose. The results with my new regime are mixed. Jezebelle has the grace to lie down on her dog bed in the living room and not look at me when I callously sit on the furniture. Baguette, who is much craftier than Jezebelle, stares up at me from the floor with her big brown eyes. Is she chastising me, accusing me. It’s not as though she has no good napping options. She sleeps on my bed. She sleeps on the old sofa in the loft. Remorsefully, I let her keep the new sleeping den she created among the carelessly flung casual clothes on the floor of my bedroom closet. Her black nose peeps from under the low-hanging formal shirts. Her fur sticks to. Source: www.newsadvance.com
