Some businesses expect boon from Cape Blanco Country Music Festival - Coos Bay World

SIXES — As music fans pack up their campers, coolers and folding chairs to head for a weekend of Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, The Band Perry and other country music favorites, along with a healthy dose of South Coast wind, local... Located a few miles north of Port Orford on sheep and cattle grazing properties owned by the McKenzie and Puhl families, the music festival, sponsored by Bi-Mart, is in its second year, so many businesses have a better idea of what to expect this... Last year the festival, a sister of the Bi-Mart Willamette Country Music Festival, drew about 13,000 participants. So far this year, approximately 20,000 tickets have been sold, according to organizers. That's a boon to many local businesses, especially those who sell or provide food, fuel or camping merchandise. The festival last year also was a way for school groups, service clubs and nonprofits in Bandon, Port Orford, Gold Beach and Brookings to do fundraising, either by volunteering and receiving a donation, or by selling goods or services at the event. The same will be true this year. Grocery stores and restaurants saw an increase in customers during last year's festival. Ray's Food Place in Bandon is one place music festival-goers stop on their way south. Store manager Jed Arrington said they are preparing for the influx of customers by treating it similar to Fourth of July weekend. “We're definitely gearing up for it,” Arrington said. “The numbers come out really comparable to July Fourth weekend as far as (stocking up on) inventory levels. Fourth of July is a big weekend for us, so to have another Fourth of July weekend is pretty awesome. Arrington said the store is stocking up on water, wood and typical camping supplies. Last year, someone in the store's corporate office used numbers from a similar festival near another Ray's Food Place location to plan on the amount of inventory the Bandon store might use. “I think we did pretty close to what he predicted, and we're hoping for even better this year,” Arrington said. But staffing is an issue, he said, adding that Ray's in Bandon is currently hiring. Price 'N Pride also is stocking up for an influx of customers. "Overall we've bumped up our inventory, especially for pop, beer and water, and. Source: theworldlink.com

Goods abandoned at EAA benefit community - The Oshkosh Northwestern

While the hustle and bustle of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture 2015 has died down, out-of-towners who came left a lasting impact on the Oshkosh community — or rather, the stuff they leave behind has. Those who camp on the grounds purchase things like camping gear, tents and coolers, awnings, lumber and pavers. Rugs, credit cards, bicycles, cameras and even eye glasses are all picked up by EAA staff and volunteers after the convention has ended. Many of those items are left behind because they don’t fit in the plane, said EAA spokesman Dick Knapinski. After a period of time that gives the item’s owners a chance to reclaim them, it’s all donated to local organizations like Goodwill, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Lions Club International. “It’s not an overwhelming amount, but there is always abandoned supplies out there,” Knapinski said. “And we want to make sure we find the best possible use for them. Kathy Ertmer, manager of the Habitat ReStore, said they received two loads of 16-by-16 concrete pavers and a lot of good dimensional lumber from vendors that were at AirVenture. Vendors donate items every year, she said. The store has received lumber, fluorescent lighting and fixtures, patio furniture and tables in the past. “This is increasing our sales and giving a wonderful opportunity for those who cannot afford to purchase new to purchase gently used at a significant discount,” Ertmer said. Proceeds from ReStore sales go toward building Habitat for Humanity homes. Even the 5,000 people from 25 different countries who stayed at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh last week provided the community with donated items. Guests left fans, bag chairs, hats, clothes, even silverware and anything that can’t fit on the plane home, Andy Schumacher, UWO Gruenhagen Conference Center operations and reservations manager, said. The university provides tags guests can use to mark items they wish to donate. On rare occasions, people have even left a TV behind. GREGORY: A little dirt won't hurt NASCAR - Bristol Herald Courier (press release) (blog)

That was a hot topic during Monday’s opening round of the Schaeffer’s Southern National Series at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Virginia. The sight, sound, smell and feel of 15 Super Late Models ripping off 120-mph laps around high-banked, half-mile ovals such as Wythe is unlike anything in motorsports. No lap is ever the same as fearless drivers and tireless crewmen continually search for that elusive cushion of clay that will allow for a famed “slide-job” pass and a charge to the front. Yes, it’s controlled chaos. But judging from the empty seats Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the embarrassing lack of balance in the Xfinity Series each week, NASCAR could use a big dose of chaos. Of course, the cost of converting dirt tracks into NASCAR-worthy facilities would be exorbitant. Thorny issues would include the installation of safety walls, plus increased parking, adequate lighting and expanded restroom facilities. But NASCAR kingpins such as Bruton Smith know all about overcoming massive hurdles. Witness the 2016 Battle at Bristol football game at Bristol Motor Speedway. Thanks to the work of track mastermind Tony Stewart and his staff, the fun factor at Eldora runs deep. Fans, including many dirt disciples from Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, endured long treks to cram into the 18,000-seat, half-mile mecca last week. They arrived at the track early in the morning and stayed through the heat races, feature and post-race fireworks. That’s the same county-fair formula that attracts dozens of racers and thousands of fans to Wythe Raceway every Saturday night. It’s a shame that so many of those fans who moan about the lack of action in the Sprint Cup series never venture out to their local dirt track. From the sleek late models to the battle-scarred pure streets, the dirt warriors bump, slide and wrestle away around the track every lap. Just imagine the 1979 cult classic motion picture Mad Max and you have the scene of a typical dirt track. Emotions run high on the track and in the pits. There is feuding, fussing and fighting, followed by hand-shaking and fellowship. That’s just dirt track racing among Alpha males and courageous females. The all-time superhero to dirt racing fans is Scott Bloomquist, a long-haired driving daredevil and mechanical genius from Mooresburg, Tennessee. For various reasons, Bloomquist never made the leap to NASCAR land yet he still. Source: www.heraldcourier.com
