What/Where: 1BR/1BA in Greenpoint. Square footage: 936. Maintenance/CC: $532. There is a lot to like about this one-bedroom condo in Greenpoint. It has a huge kitchen, compete with a dishwasher, a washer/dryer, hardwood floors, and best of all, two private balconies. Buy this century-old Lake Claire house and never worry about freezing to death again. It's a big concern down here in the South. at least you'd think so based on the eight fireplaces scattered throughout this five-bedroom house. Designed by Leila Ross Wilburn — one of Georgia's first female architects — the 3,380-square-foot home features original light fixtures, doorknobs, heart pine hardwoods and fireplace mantles and tiles. It's safe to assume that some of the wacky, circus-esque color schemes (lavender and blue with a green fireplace) are more modern. The kitchen has been updated with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops but the understated renovation still allows for retention of the room's historic charm. The house, which the broker babble assures "exudes soul," also features a back deck overlooking a leafy backyard with mature trees. Lake Claire Pool is just around the corner when it's time to cool down. It asks $749,000. Source: atlanta.curbed.com
Perhaps you remember the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song A House is Not a Home . The title expresses a sentiment that rings true to me, for I believe houses are different from homes. And the difference, my friends, has everything to do with whether or not your house is a comfortable, welcoming place for you, your family and your friends. In short, it should truly be a “home, sweet, home,” to quote the title of another familiar song. Here are a few observations to help you consider to determine whether you simply inhabit a house — or whether you truly have a home. Use these ideas as a reminder list as you prepare your home for the coming season. After all, August is already upon us. * Make an entrance. Upon opening the door to your condominium, apartment or house, is there a place to rest a hat, a book or even a hostess gift. Think about yourself entering and departing your home. Everyone needs a place to drop the keys. If there is none, as well as an occasional chair or bench, there should be. Homes always have wall-lighted entry halls furnished with a console, cabinet, a good lighting fixture (one that gives proper illumination) as well as a lamp placed on the... I like a mirror, too, for a last-minute check. * Is your sitting room/living room inviting. Are your painted walls fresh, with no scuffs. Is there a seating group that can accommodate six or eight people — namely a grouping with a sofa and two lounge chairs with the occasional pull ups. Rooms with only a sofa and a club chair do not say “welcome. ” I believe a living room, if space permits, should have two ample sitting groups, although one might be simply a card table with four chairs, the kind with upholstered seats and backs. Comfortable card chairs can be moved from place to place. * Let there be (the right) light. Are your rooms properly lighted. In a guest bedroom, for instance, make certain that the night tables have lamps that provide a bed reader with the necessary light. Is there a reading lamp located next to the club chairs. Are there wall lights provided to help someone find a bathroom at night. Also, bathroom and dressing table lighting should be on the top of the list for functional use and theatrical glamour. Elsewhere, does your kitchen have under counter lighting to assist with cooking. Does your front door have a proper lantern so there is no problem finding the key. Source: www.palmbeachdailynews.com
