Western Carolina makes 3 significant new appointments - Asheville Citizen-Times

Western Carolina University announced several significant hires June 5 in connection with the quarterly meeting of the WCU Board of Trustees. The appointments include Brett H. Riggs as the new Sequoyah Distinguished Professor of Cherokee Studies, Farzaneh Razzaghi as dean of library services and Hugh Jack as the inaugural Cass Ballenger Distinguished Professor of Engineering. Following is more information on each announcement:. Riggs, a research archaeologist at the UNC Chapel Hill who has worked with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on various projects since the early 1990s, will become the new Sequoyah Distinguished Professor of Cherokee Studies at Western Carolina... Riggs' appointment to the endowed professorship, which is effective Aug. 15, follows a national search. He will move into a multi-year, fixed-term faculty position held previously by Robert Conley, a noted Native American scholar and prolific author who died last February. Riggs will build upon existing partnerships between tribal and university leaders and will play an important role in developing and implementing future projects involving WCU, the Eastern Band and other Native American constituents, said Richard... "Brett Riggs is an accomplished archeologist with deep ties with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He approaches his work with a rare sensitivity that has impressed academics and tribal members alike," Starnes said. "His arrival at WCU marks a renewed institutional commitment to honoring, preserving and understanding the history and culture of our region's native people. Riggs specializes in Cherokee studies and has worked in Western North Carolina for more than 20 years studying the lives of Cherokee families during the removal era of the 1830s. In his position with the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at UNC... Riggs used the words "honored and humbled" to describe the opportunity of joining the faculty at WCU and serving in the Sequoyah Professorship. "My colleagues at Western have undertaken exciting initiatives in native health, Cherokee language, history, archeology and public heritage, and I look forward to joining their efforts and building on the foundational work of my predecessors,... For Your Home: White is not just for summer - Sioux City Journal

I love my white sofa and chairs. Not just during the summer but year-round. Every time someone new visits my house they always comment on how much they admire my decorative bravery and always follow up with, "I would love to someday have a white sofa but in my house it will never happen. I've had white sofas and chairs all my adult like, mainly because my parents never did and my mom always longed for an all-white room. I took the time to figure out how with kids and dogs that I could have what I wanted. It starts with the right fabric. You don't choose white satin, not that I ever would anyway, but satin stains and isn't pet or people friendly. Fabrics that can be washed or dry-cleaned are the best. The pinnacle, of course, is Sunbrella fabric. Yes, the same kind you see on all quality outdoor furniture is available for interior use. This fabric is Superman in a world of cloth mere mortals. Ketchup, mustard and red wine just wipe away with a damp cloth. I've put it to the test more than once in my home and others. I love to eat hot dogs in front of the TV during the big game and wash them down with a good burgundy. Still not convinced. Go for white leather. Pick a slightly textured pattern that is soft to the hand. Leather is easy to clean and wears well when jumped on by toddlers and slept-on by couch potatoes. Again, my in-house testing held up to five grandkids and lots of family spuds. Another trick. exposed wood arms. The first places to get dirty on any piece of furniture are the upholstered arms. Eliminate that problem by selecting a sofa with exposed wood arms so guests can run their hands up and down them without leaving a trace and still balance a beer can or snack plate. Still not convinced. Let's talk a little about lifestyle changes. Over the years I've had white furniture and dogs. But you do need to make some choices here. I recommend dogs that don't shed. I have to say this might be even more important if you have a dark-colored sofa. Dog hair just doesn't enhance any room's decor. Your guests may love your pet but not really want to take part of it with them when they leave. I also don't believe pets should be allowed on furniture unless they are in your lap and getting all your attention and affection. I've been into beautiful homes with expensive designer furniture only to have the entire image ruined with a beach towel covering one or all of the furniture. Really folks. Boarded Up, Ink - Fort Worth Weekly (satire) (press release) (registration) (blog)

The rows of empty buildings on Race Street in east Fort Worth look like a scene from the Great Depression. But the boarded up lots are a little misleading. The area is ground zero for what could be the city’s next bustling business and residential hub, the Six Points Urban Village. Dallas developer Pretlow Riddick has poured millions into buying and fixing buildings in various states of disrepair along the street. The Riverside Arts District, a nonprofit organization that has spearheaded the area’s revitalization efforts, has tried to engage the community with various events. City, state, and federal dollars have trickled in, and police have worked to reduce the rampant crime that recently plagued the so-called Six Points intersection, where Riverside Drive and Race and East Belknap streets cross. But beneath the veneer of city hall cheerleading, walkable streets, and open-air markets, two local business owners have found themselves caught up in the undertow of Race Street’s new wave of progress. A couple trying to open a tattoo shop in the neighborhood has had to fight the area’s new zoning restrictions. Despite the fact that there is another tattoo shop just a couple of blocks away on Race Street, the city will not allow another one unless the zoning commission approves a change in the building’s status, which most observers think is unlikely. When Brittany Elliot and Henry Vasquez opened Born Late Records & Tattoos on the corner of Race and Retta streets two months ago, the couple thought they had finally realized their shared dream. Vasquez owned a record store in Haltom City, and Elliot, who was featured on Season 2 of the Oxygen Network’s tattoo reality show, Best Ink , had been commuting to Dallas to work and wanted to set up shop closer to the couple’s Eastside home. “For an urban village it seems like they want a mixture of art, culture, and all kinds of cool stuff, which I really thought our store would be perfect for,” Elliot said. “But then we had this monkey wrench thrown into the gears. The interior of Born Late looks like it’s equal parts record store, vintage clothing and gift shop, and heavy metal shrine. There are handmade tables emblazoned with the image of Kiss, walls full of posters from long-ago Deep Ellum shows at the Orbit Room, Deep Ellum Live, and The Galaxy Club, and racks of vintage concert t-shirts with names as varied as Chicago and...
