Autistic teen diverts flight to Oregon - USA TODAY

PORTLAND, Ore. — An autistic teen grounded a commercial flight to Portland last week, a decision her mom said was unnecessary and humiliating. Donna Beegle, her husband, son and daughter were flying home Tuesday from Walt Disney World when they ran into a problem. It started during a layover in Houston. "Juliet didn't really eat," Beegle said. Juliet, now 15, was diagnosed with autism at age 3. And when she doesn't eat, she has problems, her mom said. On the flight from Houston to Portland, Beegle said she asked a United flight attendant if her daughter could have something hot to eat. The flight attendant told her only first-class passengers get hot food. Beegle told the flight attendant her daughter would probably have a meltdown. And she did. "She lashes out and scratches," said Chuck Forbes, Juliet's dad. One of the flight attendants eventually brought the teen some hot food. Beegle offered to pay and thought that would be the end of it. "The next thing we hear is we're doing an emergency landing in Salt Lake City," Beegle said. "We have a passenger on board with a behavior issue. "After working to accommodate Dr. Beegle and her daughter during the flight, the crew made the best decision for the safety and comfort of all of our customers and elected to divert to Salt Lake City after the situation became disruptive," said a... "We rebooked the customers on a different carrier and the flight continued to Portland. Beegle and her family flew the rest of the way on a Delta flight, but she has filed a complaint with United and the FAA. She said she plans to file a lawsuit. "My goal is training," Beegle said. "They need training. Source: www.usatoday.com

Churchill's backside takes care of horses and old horsemen - USA TODAY

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The white-haired horseman still sleeps above the stable. When the sun comes up, 87-year-old Richard Miller shuffles from his little room above barn No. 11 on the backside of Churchill Downs. He plops into a plastic chair on the balcony and waves to the stable hands who do the job he did for six decades — the one he would still be doing if his body would let him. "I once walked a horse worth a million dollars," he likes to brag. "I'd rather be down there now walking the horses. But now, Miller is a ward of the backside. The other grooms help him take a bath, trim his hair and tie his shoes. He lives in the horse barn because he's always lived in a horse barn. He can't imagine living anyplace else. "He's an old racetracker, true and tough," said Greg Foley, the trainer he worked for for 30 years. "So he's going to stay here with us as long as we can take care of him. Work days on the backside begin before dawn, pay is skimpy and attire trends toward jeans and T-shirts, a world away from the high-roller suits and plumed hats on Millionaire's Row for the Kentucky Derby. For the 160,000 fans packed into the track on Derby Day, the green-shingled barns of the backside are scenery. And the 1,000 workers who toil in obscurity inside of them don't expect the visitors to give them much thought. "We're indispensable. they can't do this without us," said Mike Wells, who has spent the last nine years as a hot walker, offering the horses soothing words as he leads them around the stable to cool off after workouts. It's not always as serene as it sounds: He's been bitten, kicked, stepped on and slammed into walls by powerful horses. They feed, exercise, bathe the thoroughbreds, part of a morning ritual that runs like clockwork. Most of them live there, too, crammed into dorms, small apartments and tack rooms. It is, depending on who's describing it, a little city or a giant family. They have a chapel, a school and an annual Easter egg hunt. Ken Boehm, the racetrack's chaplain, says Miller's life at the Greg Foley Racing Stables is evidence that the backside isn't filled with roughnecks, gamblers and boozers. It is a community of workers, from dozens of nations, he said. They take care of the horses, and they take care of their own. And Miller is one of their own. Like many others, the Foley crew spends the winters at the racetrack in New Orleans and. Source: www.usatoday.com

The Shepherd's Garden open for reflection in Sioux City - Sioux City Journal

SIOUX CITY | A decade of planning and five years of work culminated Thursday in the dedication of a new green space developers intend as a place for quiet reflection. The Shepherd's Garden, with plants, walkways, an artificial waterfall, plaques with Bible verses and three crosses, has taken the place of an abandoned YWCA, then an empty lot, at the northwest corner of Sixth and Jackson streets. A light but steady rain moved Thursday's dedication ceremony inside the neighboring First Presbyterian Church, at 608 Nebraska St. , where The Shepherd's Garden Foundation representatives expressed gratitude to the more than 100 donors who funded... “This is truly a community project,” said fundraising director Garry Smith. “I think a lot of those in Sioux City are very excited about having this eyesore turned into a beautiful space, and I’m just thrilled at how it looks. Smith said the foundation will soon install plaques for the visually impaired and that an additional $100,000 will be needed to cover maintenance costs. The group turned down a $140,000 state Vision Iowa grant last year after the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation said awarding public money to a project intended for religious worship violated the U. S and Iowa constitutions. Private donors stepped up to make up the difference. Paul Johnson, of Midlands Clinic in Dakota Dunes, was one of the garden's original visionaries. He said the space is for everyone. “If you don’t want to read anything, you can just enjoy it and have a picnic lunch and watch the waterfalls,” said Johnson. “It exists for those with great faith, those with little faith and those with no faith. For First Presbyterian member Yvonne Hazlett, the garden will be a place for relaxation in an otherwise secular and busy life. “I think it will be a wonderful addition to Sioux City. I’m hoping it gets used often and will be a place where people can meditate and get away from what is troubling them,” Hazlett said. CORRECTION: The Shepherd's Garden is on the site of a former YWCA.
