State agency doles out Mohegan slot revenues - News - Republican Herald - Republican & Herald

HARRISBURG — A new afterschool program in Luzerne County is the largest recipient of this year’s distribution of $12. 7 million of local slots revenue from Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The SHINE, or Schools and Homes in Education, program received $831,000 on Wednesday from the Commonwealth Financing Authority to help provide afterschool programs reaching nearly 1,000 students in Wilkes-Barre Area, Hazleton Area, Wyoming Valley... The SHINE grant was among a total $12. 7 million awarded by CFA to help fund 54 economic development and civic improvement projects across Luzerne County. The SHINE program under the sponsorship of Wilkes University aims to provide classroom instruction and teaching career skills for students in grades K-8. The program has existed for a number of years in Carbon and Schuylkill counties. John Yudichak, D-14, Plymouth Township, and U. S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-11, Hazleton, are bringing the program to Luzerne County as part of their effort to address organized gang activity. Yudichak co-chairs a newly formed legislative caucus to promote afterschool education. At a state Capitol rally last May, Hazleton police Chief Frank DeAndrea said afterschool programs are a good deterrent to juvenile crime. The CFA awarded $500,000 to help renovate Public Square in Wilkes-Barre into a new hub to foster technology. This money will help finance upgrades to the square, renovation of the Innovation Center for eBay Enterprise and renovations to the First National Bank Building for Digital Net Agency. Hazleton will benefit from a $475,000 award to help renovate the former Security Savings Bank into a new city arts center housing the Hazleton Art League, a $100,000 award for a downtown park and plaza and $100,000 award to expand the Helping... The renovation of the circa 1909 bank building is the centerpiece of a strategic plan to revitalize the downtown, Krista Schneider, executive director of Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress, said. Two grants will underwrite efforts to consolidate municipal services. The Northeast Luzerne County Police Department got $200,000 for start-up costs. The West Side Council of Governments received $200,000 to purchase public safety and public works equipment. The local distribution of slots revenue in Luzerne County was. Entertainment Highlights: CJ Chenier Aims to Get Hanover Crowd Moving - Valley News

Go ahead: Bring a folding chair or a blanket to tonight’s free concert on the green in Hanover. You’ll need someplace to put a light jacket, a sweater, your pocketbook and maybe a cap — everything but your derriere — while dancing to the zydeco stylings of C. J. Chenier and his Red Hot Louisiana Band. “We’re gonna bring the heat,” Chenier, who plays the accordion, said during a telephone interview last week from the New York State Thruway, en route to Cape Cod. “Nobody sitting down. In most places, people get into the spirit pretty quick. In New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, it depends on the crowd. “Sometimes, you got to coax ’em a little bit. Growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, in the 1960s and 1970s, Chenier needed more than a little coaxing to listen to, let alone move to, the music of his Grammy-winning father, “King of Zydeco” Clifton Chenier. “Zydeco wasn’t a popular music at all then,” recalled Chenier, who. By the late 1970s, however, the father had coaxed the son into joining the band. And as the elder Chenier slowed down with diabetes, he encouraged his son to switch instruments. “I started messing around with (the accordion), and it took five or so years before I figured it out,” C. J. Chenier said. “In some ways, I’m still trying. I started with a smaller one, because for a while, all the keys and buttons were really confusing — lots of bass notes to learn. After his father died in 1987, Chenier completed the transition to both the instrument and the genre. And by 1990, Paul Simon was commissioning him to play on his album,. Albums that followed included My Baby Don’t Wear No Shoes, Too Much Fun and The Big Squeeze. The latter, coming out barely a decade after Chenier inherited his father’s instrument and band and legacy, earned him the Living Blues Critics’ Award and the prize for best zydeco album from the Association for Independent Music. “In the ’90s, (zydeco) got real, real popular,” Chenier said. “It was the right time. The intensity started rising. So sound engineer Doug Linnell noticed, while working the old Rhode Island Cajun Bluegrass Festival in the early 1990s. “The first time I worked with the band, they were a bit late — got lost on the way, I guess,” said Linnell, who lives in Hartland. “They pull up in this stretch Dodge van, and eight or nine guys come spilling out in the nick of time. They jumped on stage as quick as possible and put on a. Source: www.vnews.com

The share typically falls in the $12 million range and often funding requests exceeds available revenue. This year, CFA weighed funding requests from 103 applicants totaling $64 million, officials said. The authority has seven members, three cabinet secretaries and appointees. Source: citizensvoice.com
