Volunteers needed for pilot surgery signposters scheme - Portsmouth News

The search is on to find volunteers who can point patients towards non-medical networks to improve their wellbeing. The NHS is teaming up with Gosport Voluntary Action (GVA) to search for Surgery Signposters – volunteers who will play a crucial role in ensuring that people in the town don’t miss out on all of the help and support available locally. The new role is based at Waterside Medical Centre in Mumby Road. Volunteers would work with practice staff to guide patients towards the many local charities and support groups that could help them to be healthier, encourage patients to take part in community groups, which has been proven to lead to a happier... Whilst based in Waterside, the service will be available for all Gosport patients to be referred to by their GP or health professional. Volunteers would receive referrals from GPs, and then discuss with individuals what support might most benefit them, and help them make contact with individuals or groups which could help. Surgery Signposters is a two-year pilot scheme being run by NHS Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS South Eastern Hampshire CCG, Gosport Voluntary Action, Community First HEH and Fareham Community Action. Dr David Chilvers, who chairs F&G CCG, said: ‘If a patient is feeling lonely, or lacking confidence, or wanting help to lead a healthier life, then the volunteers could step in and steer people towards the invaluable help already provided by the... ‘Surgery Signposters could have a really profound impact on someone’s quality of life. There will be training sessions on the mornings of July 13, 16, 20 and 23 and ongoing support in the role. If you are interested, and want an informal chat about the role, please contact Brenda Woon on (023) 9228 2085 or email Brenda. What is a Cookie. What is a Flash Cookie. Carers' hub to provide vitalsupport and information - Portsmouth News

It is being run by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire and funded by NHS Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Claire Skilton, who is managing the project for The Princess Royal Trust, said: ‘These hubs are proving a terrific shoulder for a number of carers to lean on. ‘It’s a place where they can go to find out more about services but also, very... ‘The hubs reduce social isolation and provide both professional and peer support – and have led to friendships developing. ‘The carer becomes better informed and is therefore able to make choices clearly. ‘They find out more about their rights and entitlements, which will lead to reduced inequalities. ‘Carers are also able to access health checks and gain advice on accessing health services in an appropriate and timely manner. ‘Various organisations and professionals, such as a law firm, telecare agency, British Red Cross and trading standards, will join together at the hub to promote their services and be available to offer support, advice, information and guidance to... It’s a one-stop shop. An area of relaxation is also provided where newspapers, crossword puzzles, jigsaws, a reminiscence area and other activities are provided. Light refreshments such as tea, coffee and cold drinks are available. Dr David Chilvers, who chairs the CCG, said: ‘Many carers face huge pressures and challenges in looking after their loved ones. ‘Hopefully the hub will offer them some invaluable help and support. ECHO PETS: Give your cat a perfect post to sharpen claws! - Daily Echo

Q: Why does my cat scratch the furniture. A: The most obvious reason is for the cat to sharpen its claws. Raking claws on an appropriate surface removes the worn, outer sheath of the claw, revealing a sharper layer below. A second reason is to mark their territory and physical scratch marks provide a visual marker. Cats have scent glands between their paw pads, and scratching marks their scent on to the object - this is why cats often prefer to scratch an owner’s favourite chair, they’re adding to their scent. As scratching is a natural behaviour, suitable outlets need to be provided for this, such as a scratch post. These should be large enough to allow the cat to fully stretch up and extend their legs, and sturdy enough to stay upright when claws pull down. Sofas and chairs normally fulfil this criteria better than many scratch posts. Posts should be positioned appropriately. Place one near sleeping areas so cats can scratch when they wake up. Consider where they choose to scratch. If it is near doorways or a secluded area, position a post nearby. When trying to stop your cat scratching furniture, cover the area being used and provide a suitable alternative in front of this. Encourage use of the scratch post by applying catnip and playing with fishing rod toys nearby. regulated This website and associated newspapers adhere to the Independent Press Standardards Organisations's Editors' Code of Practice.
