Portsmouth community center keeps kids' brains fresh in summer ... - The Virginian-Pilot

PORTSMOUTH. Kemare Parker had planned to watch TV for much of the day until a friend bugged him about going to the Swanson Homes community center. There, the rising fourth-grader could read books in a new reading center, his friend Zyon Jackson said. "I don't like reading," Kemare said. He's into superheroes. But Zyon, a rising third-grader, wouldn't let up. He's into a book series called "Pete the Cat. So they decided to go together and check it out. Zyon's persistence is paying off for them both this summer, the time when educators say children are at risk of forgetting valuable lessons learned during the school year. The boys hope to make honor roll this school year, so they want to keep reading to stay sharp. The reading center opened last month and includes dozens of books, a computer, a sofa and bean bag chairs, plush rug and pillows, donated by Cox Communications as part of its educational initiatives. Cox has invested about $13,000 in neighborhood-based centers in Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia and Roanoke. "Our whole goal is to provide books to kids to keep them engaged over the summer so they're ready to return to school in the fall," Cox spokeswoman Sarah Buck said. Cox employees volunteered to install the book cases, set up the furniture and paint the room in bright colors. "When we came during volunteer day, they were working off of one pack of construction paper, two pairs of scissors and one glue stick," she said. Cox also donated art and craft supplies, stocking shelves with construction paper, glue and fuzzy balls. Those materials help provide educational enrichment to curb summer learning loss. Without such resources, educators say, children will have to play catch-up when school resumes. Students could lose up to two months worth of certain knowledge if not engaged in educational activities, according to the National Summer Learning Association. Children from low-income families face greater risks because of limited access to quality educational resources and opportunities. In Swanson Homes, most of the families live at or below the poverty level, according to Aisha Sabur-Jarvis of the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The new reading center provides more educational opportunities, Sabur-Jarvis said. "It just took us to a whole other level," she said. Children can choose from books about. Source: hamptonroads.com

Shocker: There's a Confederate Flag Sewn Into Lincoln's Chair at Ford's Theatre - New York Observer

As national debate rages about the Confederate flag, a peculiar installation of that controversial banner may be hiding in plain sight – inside the cushion of Abraham Lincoln’s rocking chair, a replica that rests in a balcony box in the re-built... The builder of the replica chair—a now-deceased craftsman named Carlton McLendon—lived in Montgomery, Ala. and felt bitter toward the Union because two of his Confederate ancestors died in the four-year conflict. Ford’s Theatre – a popular and compelling tourist attraction run by the National Park Service – is not aware of the legend of the Confederate flag in Lincoln’s chair. Initially, McLendon resisted several requests by the Department of the Interior to build the chair but eventually relented and added a sly bit of unofficial interior decorating. He included the Confederate flag, the very same banner that is currently under figurative fire since a white racist massacred nine black churchgoers with a gun two weeks ago in Charlston, S. C. The Charleston killer – Dylann Storm Roof – posted... Since the mass killing, governments of several former Confederate states have removed the symbol from some state property. However, South Carolina – the flash point of the Civil War — is merely considering its removal from state capitol grounds. A black woman pulled it down from its flag pole Saturday before authorities apprehended her and hoisted it back up. Other Confederate flags were burned in public over the weekend in New Orleans and Chicago. Defenders of the banner – technically the battle flag of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia – say it represents Dixo-American cultural heritage and pride and that it honors the memory of the valiant rebel warriors who bravely fought... Critics say the red, white and blue flag with a bold “X” cross is the American swastika and represents both human slavery of African-Americans until the mid-19. “He definitely did it,” Mr. Kuehndorf said by telephone from.
