A heritage of hairdos in Greece - Democrat and Chronicle - Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

The ties that bind in the Antelli family business are made of hair. Three generations of Antellis have been cutting and styling hair at the same salon in Greece for nearly half a century. The shop on North Greece Road has gone by different names over the years, starting with Albert's Beauty Salon in 1968 and now called Antelli Salon and headed by Albert's granddaughter, Ashley. In between, the place was known as Rick Antelli/Your Mane Stylist. Rick, a former Monroe County legislator and Greece town councilman and Ashley's father, met his wife, Laurie, at the salon. You guessed it: Laurie also was a hair stylist, as was Rick's Aunt Mary (Albert's sister), who ran a shop in Charlotte for 40 years. "I always hung out here when I was little," said Ashley, 22, from the recently renamed salon at 610 North Greece Road, just north of Latta Road. "I used to do my grandma's hair. I was always doing my friends' hair. Rick now concentrates on his real estate business and his role as Greece's receiver of taxes, but still takes hair appointments on Saturdays and the occasional night. "I'm never going to give this up," he said. "Some of my customers have been coming here for 30 years. I've met a lot of good people, good friends. I'm in a lot of family (photo) albums giving first haircuts. Some of those people are grown now and bringing in their kids. The business legacy actually started earlier, after Albert returned home from World War II. Albert opened a shop on Clinton Avenue in Rochester around 1948 and opened the second salon in Greece two decades later. He died in 2007. Rick started working at the salon about 1982. It was the family business and he was familiar with it, so he got into it after attending the Continental School of Beauty. The clientele and scheduling was different then. "When I started, it wasn't so much unisex," he said. "It was just women. I would do a man's hair just once in a while. Now, it's a mix of both. Women would come in on a weekly basis then. Now it's every four to six weeks. Rick had tanning beds at his salon at one time. One of his barbers worked there for 25 years before he died in 2006. Laurie grew up in Spencerport and was involved in modeling as a girl. She got more interested in hair styling and took classes through BOCES 2 while attending Spencerport High. Laurie started as an intern at Rick's salon. they fell in love and got married a couple years. Source: www.democratandchronicle.com
