To make his contemporary art furniture, Luke Proctor uses a 1920s power hammer, a 275-pound German anvil, beeswax and flames reaching 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit. Proctor, a blacksmith who fashions his Shaker- and Danish Modern-inspired artworks in a 19th-century blacksmith shop in Mount Vernon, is one of nearly 500 artists to be featured in next weekend’s Art Fair on the Square. The event is sponsored by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art , and is a major fundraiser for the free-admission museum and its many outreach programs. More than 200,000 people are expected to attend. As he also did last year, Proctor received an “invitational award” for the 2015 Art Fair on the Square, meaning he has automatic entry into the highly competitive, juried show. But the art fair on Madison’s Capitol Square, running Saturday and July 12, is only one of many top-shelf Midwest events where Proctor is exhibiting this summer. In June, he was among 10 artists in the Milwaukee Art Museum ’s prestigious Lakeview Festival of Art to take home an Award of Excellence. He’s won multiple top honors at other art fairs around the country, too. “It’s a cool life. It’s real different, though,” Proctor said in late June, as he worked on pieces for that weekend’s Des Moines Arts Festival. “You’re real nomadic, moving from show to show,” he said. With tons of metal furnishings loaded into his Sprinter van, “It’s kind of like the carnival coming to town. Source: host.madison.com

Garland Center earns excellence honor - Sampson Independent

Greetings to all. It is good to sit down and write again. It has been a while. I have missed sharing my seniors’ moments. It has been a busy spring and the start of a summer. First of all, a special thanks to everyone who helped in any way to get us through the certification process. We are proud to say we received the Senior Center of Excellence for five more years. A special thanks to Linda Armwood who worked day and night for five months making sure we got everything right. My participants were great and volunteers were A plus. To God Be The Glory. The Older American Month was a great success. Special thanks to Stephen Maynor and the Commission of Indian Affairs who was our Gold Sponsor. Once again thank you, Mr. Maynor. Thanks to all our local sponsors that provided drinks, water, snacks, tents, and money donations. A special thanks to Lesia Henderson and the Sampson County Family Caregivers Program for their contribution. The cakewalk was the “bomb”. Another thanks to Mrs. Henderson and family caregivers for providing a library for the center. If you have not visited the library, please come see it. The library is such a calm, wonderful place to work on computers, read, relax or meditate. We share the computer lab. Thanks to all that contributed books, lamps and chairs. To God Be The Glory. We have several upcoming events. The Cooperative Extension Service with Dona Adams is sponsoring an eight-week class entitled Making Good Food Choices. It is a great program every Tuesday at 10 a. m. Come exercise, learn new recipes, and try tasty samples. This is a free class. Shuttle shopping is the first and third Friday of each month. You can get your groceries, medicines, visit the bank and enjoy a snack. Larry Sutton presents a history program on the second and fourth Wednesday at 12:30 p. m. Chair volleyball is a big thing here at the center. Please come out and try it. We will have lots of fun and laughter with good exercise. Volunteers are needed in the Garland Community Garden. Let’s work together and reap the harvest. We are behind since the grounds have been so wet that no one has been able to work and plow the field. Thank God it is now ready to plant. Call Sheila Smith at 385-5107 or Marie at 596-8246 if you are able to help. We are all excited because “Together we stand and divided we fall”. God is so good. we give him Honor and Blessings. He is worthy to be praised. He woke us up this morning. Source: clintonnc.com
