NORTHAMPTON — There are 18 houses on Lincoln Avenue, and at the City Council meeting Thursday about 15 residents of that wide swath of pavement extending between Bridge and North streets filled every chair on one side of the council chambers... First up was the youngest of the speakers, 7-year-old Shira Sweet, whose parents, Valerie Gintis and William Sweet and younger brother Ari, sat watching from the audience. After Mayor David J. Narkewicz helped her out by bringing the microphone at the podium down a few feet, Shira read the simple words she’d written the night before: “There’s a lot of kids on my street and the cars go too fast. The speed limit is 30 mph. That is too fast for cars to drive on our street. I think it should be 20 mph. Shira and the others who spoke did so during the beginning of the meeting when the public may address the council on any topic they wish. Carl Kneer, 36, of 47 Lincoln Ave. , said with 20-plus children on the street, residents are concerned both about the number of tractor-trailer trucks that travel the street as a cut-through to the Industrial Park, but also about cars that, he said, “gun it” going down the street. Joseph Squires, 59, said he and his wife, Michele Squires, have lived in their home at 38 Lincoln Ave. for 27 years, during which time the problems with roaring trucks and speeding cars “has gone from bad to a nightmare. He and other residents said they are awakened at night by tractor-trailer trucks that shake the houses — no matter how far back they are set from the road. He said on Mother’s Day, his family had a picnic on their lawn that was repeatedly disturbed by noisy trucks going by. “It felt like we were having a picnic along the breakdown lane of Interstate 91,” said Squires. “We have lost our quality of life. Gintis, 43, said she loves living on a street with so many children who play outside together, like a bygone era. “It’s a beautiful neighborhood, however it is terrifying as a parent,” she said. Michael Spink, 44, of 44 Lincoln Ave. , said he would like to see speed bumps, a crosswalk, and a lower speed limit — and help from political leaders to achieve those goals. “We need leadership because it is getting unsafe,” Spink said. As is the custom, speakers during public comment address the council although councilors are not. Source: www.gazettenet.com
“I think we’re about six and a half years into the planning,” said Jason Alexander, and though he smiled I knew he wasn’t joking. For those who have enjoyed Free Range Brewing’s beers at festivals over the years, its soft opening last week in NoDa (2320 N. Davidson St. ) has been a long time coming. The first time I actually sat down with Jason and his brother, Jeff Alexander, was in late 2012, on the last Saturday of the year. We met at Amélie’s bakery in NoDa and, over coffee, talked about their plans to open a small brewery focused on brewing with locally sourced ingredients. They told me about their beers and how each had a story behind it. And as I was leaving, they shared a waxed bottle of Abbie Was Stout, brewed in homage to Jason’s black lab. Had I looked straight out as I was leaving Amélie's, I would have spied their future home – even though none of us could have guessed it on that December day in 2012. Then, I would have seen a nondescript brick building with a metal roll-up door. Today that metal door has been replaced by a new, glass version, and above it hangs a Free Range Brewing sign. In front of it all rests an old tractor, its metal long rusted, its tires long flat. The metal doors found a home inside, where their panels were transformed into tables. Among the other items finding new life in the brewery are school chairs and bus seats, an old safe and a scale. The hefty bar was fashioned from lumber taken from the Mecklenburg Mill project, and below it runs siding pulled from a mill house in NoDa, its crackled white paint showing its age. The bright red paint on the brewhouse floor, though, is certainly new. On it sit several fermenting tanks and the three-barrel brewery. While it’s much smaller than most area breweries, it will allow Free Range to cycle through a variety of unique beers. “As far as styles go, anything and everything,” said Jason. “Nothing is off limits. We want to work with as much local, seasonal and relevant stuff as we can. That much was evident in Free Range’s opening lineup of beers, which include Bob’s Pure Intentions, a brown ale brewed with Charlotte’s Pure Intentions Coffee, and Caroliner Weiss, a “wild wheat” brewed with local green and red strawberries. There is also Cream of the Crop, a cream ale brewed with oats. Art, Son of Pale, named after Jason’s son. an oyster stout called Sea of Companions. 5 percent IPA called My Fair Lady. and Jenny Bought. Source: www.charlotteobserver.com
