Haynes Knight grew up with a love for what some might call junk. "I was raised in a huge old mid-19th century carriage house. in Flourtown, Pa. , and spent my childhood rummaging around interesting old junk in the massive downstairs garages (and) old horse stalls in the funky old place," he said. There's not a wall, bookshelf or table in the retired venue manager's Cooper-Young home that doesn't speak to his veneration for vintage or his colorful life. "I am not an artist, but I feel. like when I see a piece, I know if it's good," Knight, 50, said. "In order not to be a hoarder, I have to ask myself, 'Does that really fit in my life. Everyone needs a coffee table, and for Knight, that would be an antique wooden furniture factory cart still with its iron wheels. "It helps for cleaning up under it," he said. "It took me six weeks to stain and remove all the nails and handle to get it to this point. An end table is actually an antique three-legged cricket table topped with an old piece of soapstone once used as a foot warmer. It displays a collection of miniature Japanese clay cats holding fish in their mouths. the cats are placed around an antique cast-iron toy soldier, once owned by Knight's grandfather. "I found these cats all in a box at an estate sale, and I just couldn't help myself," he said. "I put them all together, and it makes art. Some of his pieces actually are art, such as the bright blue, green, red and pink lizard hanging on the wall in the living room, which also houses the the furniture cart and the clay cats. Knight picked up the alebrije (lizard sculpture) in Oaxaca, Mexico, along with several others situated throughout his house, after he retired from managing venues and bands across the country, sold everything, and went south of the border with... "That's one piece of wood," he said of the multicolored reptile whose tail curls five times. Knight says his favorite piece is a turn-of-the-century cash register, also in the living room. He can press a few numbers and turn the crank to access the Euros, Turkish liras and other foreign currency that remind him of his many travels over the years. "I like this piece because the stain is missing right here just above the drawer from the guy's fingertips scraping off change," he said. Also from Turkey are the stained-glass lanterns he placed over the. Source: www.commercialappeal.com
