The rise of the e-commerce specialist? - InternetRetailer.com (press release) (registration) (blog)

It’s not the easiest task to lure e-commerce job candidates to the Spokane, Wash. , area, compared with in-state rival Seattle, home of Amazon. , Blue Nile Inc. and several other major e-retailers. But Josh Neblett, CEO of web-only mass merchant etailz Inc. , ranked No. 336 in this year’s Top 500 Guide, manages to find the talent he needs. His company, whose annual web sales increased 122. 2% year over year in 2014 to $60 million, had a full-time e-commerce headcount of 121 in 2014, up 68% from the previous year. That was the fifth-highest employee count growth among the 75 Top 500 retailers that shared their e-commerce personnel figures with Internet Retailer. Since data collection for the 2015 Top 500 ended, the headcount at etailz has increased to about 150, and Neblett anticipates more growth this year. Factors that help him—besides the natural beauty of the nearby Rocky Mountains—include the company’s willingness to train and develop young employees and the chance for workers to be “a big fish in a small pond,” he says. The jobs for which etailz has the most need are technology positions, he says, with design and marketing professionals in lesser demand. “We are heavily focused on tech, including software engineers,” he says. Etailz has plenty of company among e-retailers searching for tech talent. Interviews and an exclusive Internet Retailer survey reveal a growing demand for technically savvy specialists as e-commerce continues to grow—web sales in the United States, after all, grew 15. 4% in 2014 to $305 billion, the U. S. Commerce... In fact, when management consulting firm McKinsey & Co. last year asked companies to name their greatest need within the next 12 months for digital business talent among employees, the top response, cited by 44% of companies, was analytics and... But that doesn’t mean all growing retailers can afford such specialists, or that e-retailers are no longer looking for professionals with a broader, more general, base of retail knowledge. But a shift is happening, e-retail experts say. “How has e-commerce hiring changed. ” asks Richard Sexton, who 15 years ago launched multichannel furniture Carolina Rustica, who estimates he has hired about 75 online retail professionals in his career. “The high degree of specialization. In general, hiring concerns occupy prime real estate in the minds of e-commerce executives : Save for worries related to. Source: www.internetretailer.com

Mattress USA Inc. acquires furniture retailer Carolina Rustica - InternetRetailer.com

Mattress USA Inc. , operator of national mattress and furniture web sites US-Mattress. com and FurnitureCrate. com, has acquired specialty furniture and lighting retailer Carolina Rustica. Terms of the acquisition, which closed last week, were not disclosed. The combined entities will continue under the Mattress USA organization and will operate three retail stores, two in Michigan as US-Mattress. com, and one in North Carolina under the Carolina Rustica name, along with the e-commerce site CarolinaRustica. Mattress USA also operates NameBrandBeds. com, DayBedDeals. com and PartySuppliesDelivered. com, a party supplies retailer. “As our business continues to grow in both the mattress and furniture retail segments, bringing Carolina Rustica into the fold is perfect because of their brand name recognition in high-end furniture and lighting, as well as their similar business... The merger gives Carolina Rustica access to Mattress USA’s multichannel experience and resources, says Richard Sexton, who will continue as president of Carolina Rustica, No. 675 in the Internet Retailer Second 500 Guide. “We had reached a point where our growth and expansion plans were actually being hindered by our own infrastructure,” he says. “By being part of this new organization, we can draw upon their considerable expertise in all aspects of operations, marketing and fulfillment. We will also be able to expand our overall furniture business by leveraging our mutual strengths in the furniture segment. The combined companies represent more than 200 manufacturers of mattresses, furniture, lighting, bedding and accessories. The new company will continue to promote its best-selling brands, including Sealy, Simmons, Serta, Lexington Furniture, Stanley Furniture and Bernhardt, while introducing consumers to up-and-coming brands. Plans for the new entity include expanding Carolina Rustica’s Concord, NC, showroom by 8,000 square feet by year’s end. Mattress USA will continue to hire employees at its Brighton, MI, headquarters as a result of this merger and its own organic growth, the company says. Source: www.internetretailer.com

Label makers: Craft brewers get creative - Lynchburg News and Advance

Patty’s Day right around the corner, we asked Doug and Lee John of Pints O’ Plenty in Forest and Brandon Gallagher and Jake Lovelace of Ned’s Beer Shop inside Rivermont Pizza to help us single out beer labels that attract attention for their... There he was — the noble profile, those silky ears, his golden eyes gazing into the distance. And to seal the deal, a tree-filled alpine meadow sprawled out behind him, backed by snowy mountain peaks. We often don’t buy the beer. we buy the label, at least at first. And, for Black Dog Ale, it's not just any label. With the detailed drawing of the dog and the idealized depiction of the setting, all rendered in rich colors with an unmistakably retro vibe, it's a hipper, more modern version of that other icon of advertising — orange crate art. The aesthetic of the early 1900s citrus labels, with their lush, sentimental images of trees, fields, fruit and, of course, beautiful women, are a perfect match for locally brewed hops. Craft beers, loosely defined as uniquely flavored batches produced using traditional methods, reflect not just specifics of their regions but offer a peek into the psyches of their creators as well. Like any label, those on craft beers bear a brand name and product information. But since they’ve broken away from the conformity of so-called macro-brews, like Coors or Miller or Budweiser, microbrewers naturally take the next step and design labels as quaint, curious and quirky as the liquid in the bottles. Where the big brewers have the big money to hire branding experts who research and run focus groups, the little guys rely more on self-expression to draw desiring drinkers in and to make their marketing campaigns heard loud and clear. Patty’s Day right around the corner, we asked two local retailers of these artisanal alternatives — Doug and Lee John of Pints O’ Plenty in Forest and Brandon Gallagher and Jake Lovelace of Ned’s Beer Shop inside Rivermont Pizza — to help us...
