Art Museum is in a digital vanguard among U.S. museums - Philly.com

For the last 10 years, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has been systematically digitizing its entire collection of about 230,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture, artifacts, tapestries, rugs, personal artifacts - everything. Photographs, curatorial and conservation details, provenance, and analytical and art-historical minutiae have all been diligently recorded, entered into an increasingly vast database, and placed online. Other museums have also been putting their collections online, but Art Museum officials say they have moved forward with a thoroughness matched by few. Make no mistake, this is a slog. But from that slog - which last month passed the 100,000-object mark - will eventually emerge dazzling new approaches to perceiving the collection. A first view of the potential - an app aimed at children - was unveiled last week at the kickoff to Art Splash, the museum's summerlong program of child-friendly activities. The app, wrapped in dedicated iPads swaddled in red soft-foam cases, is now guiding young visitors on an alphabetical tour of 26 objects throughout the museum's 130,000 square feet of gallery space. V is for Vase. No problems finding the elaborate 16th century vase from the Urbino workshop of Orazio Fontana, with its snaky handles and painted Tower of Babel. It's on the second floor. This rather unassuming app is the first totable public manifestation of the museum's digital focus on itself. There have been other digital initiatives, but virtually all have been tied to special events and exhibitions. What makes the "A Is for Art Museum" app different is that it zeros in on the museum's permanent collection. It will not be alone for long. Sometime this summer, a free app for any mobile device will become available for the entire Rodin Museum - what's on display as well as what's in storage. "When you're in the gallery, it's going to tell you all the objects that are around you, it's going to tell you things about them, it's going to tell you how they relate to each other," said William Weinstein, the museum's director of information... Following the Rodin app, in roughly a year or so, a new "Highlights of the Collection" app will appear, making it possible to venture to the museum and see what curators consider the 50 to 100 most important works. At the same time, the museum has. Source: www.philly.com

A living/dining area that can stand up to kids and pets - Washington Post

Allison Borchers is struggling with a 19-by-12 living space in her Alexandria home. She wants to use it as a dining area as well as a kid- and dog-friendly living room for entertaining and watching television. She also needs a “landing zone” near the front door. The orange chair (not pictured) and the paint color ( Benjamin Moore’s Sail Cloth ) must stay, and she’s hoping to eliminate much of the clutter. Baskets, a Moroccan rug and orange accents add color and texture to the neutral backdrop of the room. A large mirror over the dining table (not shown) will reflect light and brighten a dark room. An area rug defines the seating area and provides a soft surface for playing. Shelving units with baskets provide storage for toys, as well as shoes, hats, gloves and other items. Keep the custom blinds, but get rid of the drapes for a cleaner, more contemporary look. A drop-leaf table (not shown) has a small footprint for everyday use, but it can expand to seat company. Show House Magic - Home & Design Magazine (blog)

A newly completed house in McLean, Virginia, hosted the 2015 DC Design House. Designed by Harrison Design and built by Artisan Builders, the 8,869-square-foot home conveys a farm-house vernacular recalling the region’s bygone days. This year, 24 area design teams transformed 28 spaces—indoors and out—using creative, innovative ideas that respected the home’s rustic style while injecting sophisti-cation, elegance and a touch of whimsy. With Home & Design as its media sponsor, the show house was open for tours April 11 through May 10. in case you missed it, we highlight each room online. Now in its eighth year, the DC Design House benefits Children’s National Health System. VINTAGE FIND Sarah Wessel’s BREAKFAST AREA began with a painting by Kitty Williams based on early 20th-century WPA photographs. It set the tone for a space that combined new and vintage pieces—and served as a visual extension of the kitchen, which Wessel also accessorized. An antique French farm table from Côté Jardin and Lee Industries chairs rest atop a soft-hued rug from Stark. For the drapes, “I reversed a hand-blocked fabric by Lee Jofa to give it a softer look,” Wessel says. Pendants from Currey & Company evoked fireflies in a jar. Design: Sarah Wessel,. OUTDOOR OASIS “Think South of France, dining al fresco,” suggests Skip Sroka of the elegant GARDEN PAVILION he designed on the patio. Fabricated by Walpole Outdoors LLC, the structure created an oasis for entertaining in the backyard. The intimate gathering space had ample room for a dining table, chairs and chandelier by Sroka Design. All-weather draperies and cushion fabrics by Robert Allen and a rug from Infinity Fabrics sported a classic blue-and-white palette. Design: Skip Sroka, CID, ASID. Antonella Cestone Lafranchise,. FUNCTIONAL & FUN Margery Wedderburn gave “a nod to the Virginia countryside” in the BUTLER’S PANTRY. She chose custom wallpaper by Stacey Tranter: faux wood for the ceiling and botanical for the walls. Dishes and glassware came to life against the backdrop of an open pantry cupboard, papered by Tranter in a horizontal stripe. Touches of vibrant teal punctuated the room, even adorning a pendant from AmericanEye that Wedderburn lacquered for the space. Design: Margery Wedderburn,. KITCHEN KARMA The KITCHEN by J.
