Bring life to a dated and dark family room - Washington Post

Designer Sharon Hayden uses paint to warm the room and brighten the paneling, and adds a long sectional to increase seating without blocking movement. Hayden, of Studio Starrs Interiors (571-212-8431, www. studiostarrs. com ), is based in Vienna. Warm up the walls with a beige, such as Benjamin Moore’s Pittsfield Buff. Use a diluted version of this color on the paneling and ceiling. Install neutral, low-pile carpeting in place of the existing red, and layer an area rug on top to define the seating space. Replace the blinds with panel drapes to add color to the room and soften the large sliding glass doors. Upholstered chairs brighten the room and add seating. Place a small bookcase next to the sectional to increase storage and double as a sofa table. A set of colorful prints above the sectional creates a focal point for the room. Use modular pieces to build a sectional that creates room for sitting and lounging, without blocking the walkway. Source: www.washingtonpost.com

2015 off to running start at Las Vegas Market - Home Accents Today

It’s a new year, and both retailers and vendors finally seem ready to shed the dead skin of the Great Recession. The mood is noticeably upbeat, with the strong level of confidence being echoed across product categories and throughout the aisles of the winter Las Vegas Market. “The show’s been really good so far. Traffic is good and the attitude is really encouraging. You don’t hear people being negative about their businesses,” said Bryan Williams, executive vice president at Crestview Collection. “People were afraid to say things are getting better for a long time, but now they have the confidence that things will be good going forward. The market is celebrating the “soft launch” of the new C5 floor this week, which was originally slated to open this summer. C5 focuses on high-end home décor, textiles and accessories and features exhibitors such as Amity Home, Auskin, Dynasty Gallery, Gold Leaf Design Group, Mitchell Black and more. Dynasty Gallery CEO Linda Corrado said the company’s new show space on C5 represents a focus on both its core gift business and its expanding home accessories business. “The customers we’ve had this morning are established customers from the gift segment of our business, and we look forward to finding new home accessory accounts, or having them find us here, so we’re really excited about that,” Corrado said. “I think this is the right floor to represent that… I think the market did a good job in directing us here, because it really is focused on tabletop now. We’ve been looking at the gift floors for a number of years but we never felt like it was the right fit for us. This is where we feel comfortable. We’re looking forward to seeing the rest of the floor plan for the summer. Corrado said Dynasty Gallery’s retail customers reported a strong fourth quarter in 2014, so she feels optimistic about the year ahead. “I know from what we’ve heard from our retailers that everyone had a great fourth quarter, and they’re feeling really great about 2015,” she said. “We have a lot of great product to offer them for that, and our new catalog is coming out in a few weeks. I think actually the home accessories portion of our business is really going to grow, even in interior design where they’re more interested in one-of-a-kind pieces. We’ve never done that much with that, but we actually have a collection that we may show some of in New York, where they’re really more one-of-a-kind for those. Source: www.homeaccentstoday.com

Glamming Up Gingham Upholstery - Wall Street Journal

IT'S HARD TO believe that anything could steal the spotlight from a hand-painted trompe-l'oeil mural featuring Greek columns and silky opera curtains, but in this sitting room (pictured) designed by the late decorator Renzo Mongiardino, it's the...
