Denzel Washington is a Killer With OCD in The Equalizer - IGN - IGN

I was among a handful of film journalists invited to the Massachusetts set of The Equalizer last August. The movie, which reunites star Denzel Washington with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua , is very loosely based on the 1980s TV series of the same name. As screenwriter Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2) explained on set, this Equalizer doesn't wear a black trench coat or drive a cool Jaguar so big fans of the TV series may be disappointed to find this is largely The Equalizer in name only. The set we visited was a former Lowe's store in Haverhill, Mass. , redressed for the movie as Home Mart. This is where Denzel's protagonist Robert McCall works. McCall, we learn, is not just some middle-aged wage-earner in the suburbs but rather a former Special Ops agent with a dark past. That's about all Denzel's hero has in common with his small screen predecessor played by the late Edward Woodward -- that and the fact that both men use their particularly badass set of skills to help defend the powerless against the wicked and... In this case, McCall is minding his own business, working at Home Mart and living a solitary existence, which includes many a lonely supper at a local diner reading classic books. It is during one such dinner that he encounters Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young prostitute in the grip of Russian mobsters. His friendship with Teri and his crusade to liberate her from the underworld draws McCall back into his old ways of kicking ass and taking names. Think Man on Fire: The Later Years. "He has tried to put the past behind him, and circumstances dictate with this innocent child that he step up and do something about it," Washington said during a break in filming. The scene being shot that day saw the Russian gangsters taking the fight to McCall at his job at Home Mart. McCall's fellow employees are endangered and he is concealing himself within the tall cargo shelves as he picks off gunmen one by one in brutal fashion. Washington's big break on the TV series St. Elsewhere coincided with The Equalizer's run on the small screen, but Washington didn't even watch the show before taking on the movie version. "I actually didn't look at the original. Well, maybe I did. When did it come on, in the '80s. ," he asked. "Yeah, I remember it, but I don't remember watching it. British guy, I remember that. Dressed well, snappy dressing. But I didn't look at it leading up to this, in preparation for. Source: www.ign.com

Denzel Washington: In between the laughter, there is time for the vigilante - Sydney Morning Herald

Not only is he fit, lithe and youthfully nimble in his movements, for which we may thank 20-odd years of boxing training, but there isn't a line on his face. "I got good genes," he says, matter-of-factly. "When I was young, all through my 20s they would ask for ID and I hated it, I'm 28 and they're like, 'No, you're not, you're 20'. Now I don't hate it so much. Now I'm like, 'You want to see my ID. ' and they're, 'Naaahh. ha ha, we need to see your senior citizen card. That life-affirming laugh fills the room. Washington took up boxing seriously in order to portray Rubin Carter in Norman Jewison's Hurricane (2000), a blistering performance that won him both the Golden Globe and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. "I haven't ever mastered it so you're always learning. As soon as you put a different person in the ring it's completely different. It's interesting, he says, in a way that lifting weights is not. the fact is that he has to do something. "Gravity is a monster. Gravity is cruel, gravity works while you sleep, and I like good food like the next person. And it's job-related, you know. You want to be the leading man or the friend of the leading man. You can easily become the buddy. Whatever else The Equalizer is – with a z, sorry, it won't Google any other way – it is a film in which Denzel Washington is very much the leading man. He plays Robert McCall, a man whose ability to take care of a room full of nasty Russian pimps is the first clear sign that he is something more than he pretends to be: just a genial guy who works the floor and cuts timber at the hardware emporium... The idea comes from a '70s television series that starred Edward Woodward, but the only thing that survives from the original is the idea of a vigilante living a double life. Woodward was an elegant Englishman who drove a Jaguar. Washington is more like us, except that he isn't. His fellow grunts at Home-mart already know he's not like them. McCall/Denzel has a kind of moral authority that means the other guys on the floor call him "Mr McCall" and wonder aloud what he did before he put on his assistant's apron. His intellectual heft is just as obvious to the young prostitute Alina (Chloe Moretz) he befriends in his local all-night diner. He's obviously not the kind of guy you hustle. Instead, she asks him about the books he reads over tea in the small. Source: www.smh.com.au
